Famous Gold Nuggets
Some miners found gold some did not. But the people who found these amazing historic gold nuggets have placed their name in history. Below are some of the famous gold nuggets found:
The Welcome Stranger- Shown by the Museum Victoria, The Welcome Stranger is the largest gold nugget found by John Deason, in Victoria, on the 5th of Febuary 1869, near a town called Moliague. He found it 3 centimetres below the surface of a Stringbark tree, with a weight of 72 kilograms, measuring 45 centimetres and 19 centimetres wide.
The Welcome- The Welcome was discovered at Bakery hill in Ballarat by the red mining hill company. It was shaped irregularly and was soon exhibited in Melbourne, but was soon sold in London November 1859. With its size as 28 centimetres by 16 centimetres, It quickly melted down.
The Hand of Faith- Found behind the Sate School in Kingower, Victoria in 1980, The Hand of Faith weighs 27.2 kilograms and is 19 centimetres by 10 centimetres. As they tried to keep this gold nugget in Australia, it was later sold and is also displayed in the Gold Nugget Casino in Las Vegas, USA.
Schlemm Nugget- The Schlemm Nugget was found in Henry Davey, in Dunolly, on the 11th of November 1872. With a weight of 15.252, it has a length of 30 centimetres by 8 centimetres and was later purchased by Mr. Charles Schlemm of Sandhurst.
